Coigach Tour - South to North

Coastal Road to Kirkaig

The coastal road to Inverkirkaig and Locinver is clearly marked as narrow and 'unsuitable for caravans' at the junction between Lochs Osgaig and Bad a'Ghail. The road climbs steeply to cross the ridge that runs west from Stac Pollaidh - the road giving an unusual profile view of western cliffs of Stac Pollaidh and, to the south east, the long outline of The Fiddler and Ben Mor Coigach.

StacPollaidh from the West

The road turns north over rough moorland and drops to cross the River Polly next to a fish farm; Inverpolly Lodge will be found at the end of the drive off to the left (towards the coast). The road ignores the coast and crosses the moorland again, weaving between lochans 2-3 km inland. Suddenly the road drops and follows the flat and wooded valley alongside the Allt Gleann an t Srathain to reach the coast. The bay here is rocky and the road is narrow as it twists under the high crags that come right down to the foreshore. Beyond the road climbs steeply and crosses the moorland again on a direct route to the River Kirkaig. Down again as the road drops steeply into the wooded valley and the bridge that crosses the river and enters Assynt District. The road continues downstream to Inverkirkaig and then on to Lochinver, running upstream is the path to the Kirkaig Falls and, if you wish, the long walk to Suilven. Above the bridge is a bookshop and cafe - but all this is outside Coigach District.
