Coigach Tour - North to South

From Achiltibuie Through Coigach to Drumrunie

From the wide bay at Badentarbat Bay the road heads north along the shores of two lochs, Lochs Vatachan and Raa, before turning east at Achnahaird Bay; this route cuts across the Rubha Mor peninsula whilst a loop takes in the villages of Polbain and Altandhu. A spur runs up the west coast to Reiff but no road ventures to the northern tip of the peninsula. There is a sandy bay and camp site at Achnahaird, but the road misses this by turning east at the head of the bay to run through the centre of Coigach to reach the main road.

Stac Pollaidh from WestGo North The narrow road follows the northern shores of three large lochs. After the first of these, Loch Osgaig, a road turns off northwards climbing the low outlying ridge to Stac Pollaidh towards Kirkaig and Lochinver.

Beyond the junction the valley road hugs the shoreline of Loch Bad a' Ghaill giving a fine aspect of the Ben Mor Cogach ridges and runs under the southern slopes of Stac Pollaidh (Stack Polly). There is a small car park by the roadside which makes an easy access point for the remarkable 600m high sandstone ridge now only 1 km away. This is a very distinctive mountain and is a popular attraction to visitors from a wide area. By now you are above the last - and largest - of the lochs, Loch Lurgainn, and the road keeps slightly above the water as it squeezes under the steeper crags of Cul Beag. The climb up this mountain from the road is a steep one - tackling the northern ridge - but a path also runs into the isolated area behind the two roadside peaks and under Cul Mor. Beyond the loch, at the highest point on the road, a path leaves the road for those walkers that wish to climb the southern mountains of Ben Mor Coigach and Sgurr an Fhidhleir (The Fiddler) and picks its way across the wet valley floor to the hills on the far side. The central double topped mountain of Beinn an Eoin that dominated the foreground above the lochs can also be climbed from this point.

It is now only a short run to Drumrunie and the main road - note the waterfall on the right; this is not seen when travelling in the opposite direction and carries an impressive amount of water after heavy rainfall.
