Summer Isles

These isles are a cluster of small islands that lie off the Achiltibuie shore at the mouth of Loch Broom. The largest of the islands, and the nearest to the mainland, is Tenera Mor which covers an area of some 3 sq kms. This hides most of the smaller isles from the village and the best roadside viewpoint is from the hill above Polbain.

During the summer season boat tours around the islands run from the pier at Badentarbat Bay - both a morning and an afternoon sailing are offered. Alternatively you can pick one of several trips that run from Ullapool halfway down Loch Broom. We took one of the afternoon trips from Badentarbat Pier on a somewhat blustery and overcast day. This is of course in keeping with our general philosophy of using the days of good weather for walking on the mountains - and playing tourist on the less promising days. It was so windy on our trip that the skipper would not take the boat beyond the shelter of the inner islands and we toured the inner bays in search of seals. We landed for a while on the island of Tenera Mor where upon we promptly headed for one of the high points on the island - under 100m high but still almost in the clouds. It was wet by the time we returned to the mainland.
