Our Ascents:

A'Mhaighdean, or The Maiden, is one of the most remote munros being situated right in the heart of the Fisherfield and Letterewe Forests. Any approach to this mountain is a long one and a single day round trip makes for a truely mammoth day out. The three possible starting points are:

From North: Start from Corrie Hallie near Dundonnell at the head of Little Loch Broom
From West: Start at Poolewe and take the path past Fionn Loch and Dubh Loch and Carnmore
From South: Start at Kinlochewe and follow the lochside path to Loch Maree before turning north at Letterewe for Carnmore

With the long approach in mind it is a much better option to take the mountain in as part of a cross-country trek between any two of the three starting points. Such a walk can take advantage of the shelter offered at Shenavall under the southern slopes of An Teallach, and an open barn at Carnmore. However it should be noted that the former hut is often very busy, and the latter shed is draughty and has no made up floor. River crossings at the head of Loch na Sealga can also be problematic in times of spate.

It was with this walk and summit bagging in mind that in the summer of 2000 we set out on a three day walk from Poolewe into the heart of this magnificent scenery. Unfortunately the weather was poor on the approach day and, although clearing that evening, it was again wet and misty the next morning. We camped at Carnmore and could see the top of this impressive mountain, but we abandoned our attempt to climb to the top.

Details of the two day outing are included in these pages, Across Fisherfield and Letterewe, and one day we will return to have another go at this one.
