Slattadale

Slattadale is on the west shoreline of Loch Maree at a point where the road swings west away from the Loch to the River Docherty and Gairloch. This area is forested and there are parking places and short walks provided by the Forestry Commission. One trail leads a short distance to the Victoria Falls where the burn from Loch Garbhaig in Flowerdale Forest drops some 12 metres in two steps. The falls are named after a visit made by Queen Victoria.

From the car park on the shore a path countines north through the trees before stricking up a valley to cross to Tollie Farm and the road just above Poolewe. This is a walk of some 8km and gives excellant views back down the full length of Loch Maree - one of the classic views in the North West highlands. The main road runs along three sides of a square to take in the coast at Gairloch and it is impossible to make a circular walk with the path. Without a second car being available it is possible to use the local bus service to make an outward trip and then walk back along the path.

Two and a half kilometres towards Kinlochewe is the Loch Maree Hotel, where the River Talladale flows into the loch. Further falls can be found some 2.5 km upstream at the head of the trees although the path on the right bank of the stream referred to in one guide is not marked on the maps.
